Networks Firm Up Convention Lineups

Via NYT
Networks Firm Up Convention Lineups
By JACQUES STEINBERG

The cable news channels expect to offer many more hours than that, perhaps none more so than MSNBC, which is seeking to swamp the efforts of its principal competitors, CNN and Fox News, by showing 20 hours of live convention programming each of the four days that the conventions are in session. To put that figure in perspective, consider that much of the official party business is conducted over the course of about four hours a night.

For MSNBC, which has scheduled its marathon coverage from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Eastern time, the challenge of having enough for Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough, among others, to discuss during all those hours would seem to be especially formidable. As television programs, conventions long ago made the transition from smoke-filled gatherings with more suspense than a “C.S.I.” episode to gleaming, ready-made infomercials where the audience knows the ending from the beginning.

(Among those to be featured on MSNBC is John Harwood, a CNBC correspondent who also reports for The New York Times, which pools some political newsgathering efforts with NBC.)

Suze Orman Gets an “F” On Her Credit Report Card
By Neel Shah

Susan “Suze” Orman, the self-proclaimed “internationally acclaimed personal finance expert” and one of Time magazine’s “Most Influential” people of 2008, has made millions of dollars doling out overly simplistic (if not overtly sexist) advice about money. In her column in this month’s issue of O: Home magazine (page 76, if you’re visiting your mom), Orman continues on with her common-sense approach to finance by talking up the importance of having a good credit score. She even goes so far as to recommend an online site, myFICO.com, where you can go and find out what yours is!

Handy advice, to be sure, but what Orman neglects to disclose to the readers of O is that she actually has a business partnership with myFICO.com: the site’s homepage has a direct link to her “Suze Orman FICO Kit Platinum” package, which can be yours for only $49.95 (a “FICO Kit” link from her website also takes you to myFICO.com). Of course, federal law now mandates that you are entitled to request a credit file disclosure once every 12 months for free, which makes Orman’s advice not particularly financially prudent to anyone but herself. Being a corporate shill, though, does admittedly help pay the bills.

Orman’s rep did not return a request for comment.

TV biz journalists owe Mike Kandel a big debt
Commentary: Plus, the appropriate blame in the NYT-Emily Gould affair
By Jon Friedman

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Myron Kandel vividly remembers when he was about to begin a career in television nearly three decades ago.
At a meeting of the Society of Business Writers and Editors, Kandel, a lifelong print journalist, told some friends about his plans to join something called the Cable News Network.
Elizabeth Yamashita, a rather blunt professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, looked at the unprepossessing Kandel and shot back, “YOU are going to be on television?”

Chagrined, Kandel replied, “Yes, Elizabeth, I’M going to be on television.”

Kandel, who started at CNN in 1980, didn’t bother to mention what he told me a few weeks ago: that his entire body of TV work until that point had consisted of three appearances on panel shows.

Suze Orman: ‘Women Hurt Themselves’

Suze Orman was on The View earlier today, worrying about Sherri Shepherd’s ill-fated efforts to sell her Los Angeles home. Her matronly concern reminded us of something she’d said the night before at the Gracie Allen Awards. She’s worried about women these days, you see. Her gender, according to the finance guru, is hurting its own cause. “I think women hurt themselves, because I think as women refuse to take their own power, and refuse to ask for what they’re worth, and hide behind being polite, there you go,” she said. This morning, after she left the ladies of The View, Sherri jumped on top of Elisabeth Hasselbeck and tackled her to the floor, breaking a chair. We’re not sure what it symbolized exactly, but it was poignant. Trust us. —Benjamin Proffer

>What? The lovely Elisabeth Hasselbeck was tackled? Whats that all about? Or is this supposed to be a joke?!

CNBC: Cramer Up In Turbulent Markets, Donny Down

CNBC: Cramer Up In Turbulent Markets, Donny Down
By Michael Learmonth

Advice for Donny Deutsch: scream a little more.

CNBC is positioning the super-tan ad man as the Oprah for entrepreneurs, but his show, “The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch,” cratered in May, averaging 114,000 viewers at 10 p.m., down 25% from last year, according to Nielsen.

Jim Cramer’s hyperactive “Mad Money,” however, had a good month despite turbulence in the financial markets. Cramer was up 21% to average 214,000 viewers at 6 p.m.

Cramer (SA 100 #19) has the advantage of catching the market faithful at 6 p.m. when they’re still in that frame of mind. At 10 p.m., Deutsch has stiffer competition across the dial — like CBS’s CSI — and his show is dragging down CNBC’s primetime, which was down 19% year-over-year. (Overall CNBC ratings, including daytime, are up 17% y/y.)

5 questions with … ‘Mad Money’s’ Jim Cramer
By Reid Spencer
Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service

Knowledgeable, opinionated Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s “Mad Money” and one of the nation’s most influential financial advisers, visited Lowe’s Motor Speedway during Coca-Cola 600 week to see, as he put it, if the American Dream was still alive in the NASCAR infield. Last Friday’s edition of “Mad Money” originated from the speedway.

As an undergraduate, Cramer was editor of the Harvard Crimson. After college, he took a job as a sportswriter for the Tallahassee (Fla.) Democrat, and, to this day, a passion for sports remains with him. Last Thursday, Cramer, 53, got a chance to ride around LMS at 150 mph in one of the pace cars. Sporting News’ Reid Spencer talked with him after the ride.

Q. So how does a Harvard-educated lawyer and former hedge-fund manager become a NASCAR fan?
A. I follow the sport. Frankly, I follow every sport, so I follow this sport, too. I’m just aware of who’s winning and who’s losing. When I was single, I candidly did more than when I got a family.

Via ReportOnBusiness
Is a Time Warner, NBC tie-up in the cards? It’s up to ‘the Jeffs’
By RICHARD SIKLOS
>EXCERPT

This is, after all, the age of recombinant media - as witnessed by the split of CBS and Viacom, the planned dismantling of IAC, the halving of Scripps and Belo, and so on. What makes NBCU and Time Warner uniquely intriguing, though, is that melding their operations fit together almost too perfectly from a strategic and cost-savings perspective. (Plus, imagine the punning possibilities if all top executives stayed involved at first - Messrs. Bewkes, Immelt, and NBCU’s CEO Jeff Zucker, aka “The Jeffs”).

What NBCU and the new Time Warner share in common is that they have made the development of cable networks and the original programming that runs on them their core competency. (And until splitting off cable, Time Warner by law is prohibited from owning a broadcast network.)

Time Warner has talked about finding a broadcast news partner and NBC News would fit that bill - though the overlap between CNN and MSNBC and CNBC would be overkill and I’d expect MSNBC to be expendable. So - if it lives to see the day - might be the CW network joint venture between Time Warner and CBS. Similarly, Mr. Bewkes might not want to keep the Universal film studio and theme parks since he already has Warner Brothers, into which he just collapsed smaller studios New Line and Picturehouse.

CNBC’s Content To Serve As Backbone For AOL Money & Finance; Cross-Platform Ad Deal Included
By David Kaplan

Nearly a year after AOL began revamping its Money & Finance channel, the site’s video content is about to get its biggest makeover to date, courtesy of CNBC, the Time Warner unit told paidContent. While the NBC Universal cable business channel remains dominant on TV, CNBC was fairly slow to make its website as credible a threat to other financial sites.

While the company has been attempting to remedy the site’s ad situation in December by handing over most of the display and contextual ad serving duties to Microsoft, the deal with Microsoft had nothing to do with getting CNBC’s content out to other sites.

CNBC’s new deal with AOL has both. In addition to CNBC providing content for AOL’s Money & Finance videos, AOL is boasting that advertisers will be able to reach CNBC TV, CNBC.com and AOL as part of a single campaign, though that doesn’t mean that Microsoft is being cut out. For those who remember, CNBC’s previous web effort was with MSN Money, a rival to AOL Money, but that deal went away at the end of 2006.

Donny Deutsch Takes His Shirt Off Again, Says He Could Run for Mayor

Donny Deutsch’s show isn’t doing so hot. Its ratings on CNBC are down 15 percent from last year, and sometimes his viewership is so low it doesn’t even register on the Nielsen scale. So it would be a good time for the Big Idea host to agree to a fluff profile, right? Maybe in the alumni magazine of his alma mater, the Pennsylvania Gazette. They’re sure to say something nice. They have to! Or maybe not. In this month’s issue, magazine writer Jordana Horn gives Deutsch the Observer treatment, allowing the former adman to make himself look kind of ridiculous. The article leads with Deutsch stripping off his shirt during the interview and boasting that he could be mayor of New York if he wanted. “You know, if I really wanted to do it, I would meet with a top advisor. I’d find some great political operatives, and hire the head of my campaign,” Deutsch said. “I’d meet with all the top people I know on Wall Street, and start a fundraising campaign.” Horn, to her credit, does a pretty good job of ignoring his “not-bad set of abs for a 50-year-old guy” and presses him on the mayor point. “You gotta say, why not me?” Deutsch persists.

Cable TV crew films advertisement at local shipyard
By KATHRINE SCHMIDT

HOUMA — Local shipbuilding will soon get a moment in the cable TV spotlight.

Cameras were rolling Monday at Houma’s Quality Shipyards as business network CNBC filmed an advertisement that will profile parent company Tidewater and its CEO.

For producer Ellen Lewis, the New Orleans-based shipbuilding company was a natural addition to the network’s series of “I Am American Business” ads, 30-second spots that promote the cable channel and highlight notable entrepreneurs. Past segments have featured Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone, rapper Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, and a fertilizer salesman.

The network wanted to look at business in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, particularly the public companies that stayed after the storm.

Tidewater fit the bill.

“They seemed to really care about their employees and the community and the job that they do,” Lewis said.

In a workday starting at 6:30 a.m., a 14-member CNBC crew dropped in to the company’s Houma shipyard to take footage of the site and interview Dean Taylor, Tidewater’s CEO and president.

Bloomberg L.P. Fills Post, Suggesting Shift to News
By TIM ARANGO

The news business may be in the doldrums, but the competition over business news could be heating up.

Bloomberg L.P., the financial data and news giant founded by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, said Monday that it had hired Norman Pearlstine, the former top editor of Time Inc. and The Wall Street Journal, to the new position of chief content officer.

The move suggests that Bloomberg, whose fortunes have been buoyed by the selling of its hugely profitable data terminals to brokerage firms and investment banks, plans to expand the journalism side of its business.

Bloomberg’s sprawling operation, which includes 2,300 editorial employees, a television outfit and a radio station, has largely been used as a tool for the Bloomberg terminals. But the growth in terminal sales has slowed with the economy and as Wall Street suffers from the fallout of the mortgage crisis.

Big financial news sites cue up Web-beats-cable sell
By Mike Shields

CNBC’s biggest threat at the moment isn’t cable’s recently launched, much-hyped Fox Business Network–it’s Web video.

Top business/financial news sites like CNNMoney.com and Yahoo Finance are pumping out more original video and now claim audiences approaching the daily ratings of the category’s leading cable network.

Such a Web-beats-cable story should turn heads in the TV industry, given the conventional wisdom that the audience generated by online video is purely additive. Thus, it’s a story some sites are bringing to buyers.

“I do think that we can start to become part of those conversations,” said Jonathan Shar, general manager of CNNMoney.com. Since dialing up video output in January from roughly two clips a day to upwards of 20, the site has shot to the top of Nielsen’s VideoCensus ranking for the financial news and information category, delivering 14.6 million total streams in March, nearly 10 million more than second-ranked MSN Money. CNN claims a daily collective reach of 807,000 viewers, over three times the 238,000 averaged by CNBC in April, per Nielsen. (CNBC officials did not return calls seeking comment.)

Commentary: A once-aspiring opera singer is making a mark in TV biz news
By Jon Friedman, MarketWatch

Each Friday this month, Media Web will profile a prominent television business journalist. Next week, we’ll look at the Fox Business Network’s “Go-To Anchor.”
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Trish Regan, a CNBC anchor and reporter for the past 14 months, has the ideal pedigree for a television-news journalist.

No, it’s not as if the Hampton, N.H., native did it the old-fashioned way by starting out in a market like Dubuque before climbing the ladder to CNBC, a unit of General Electric. And it isn’t her Exeter/Ivy education, her former reign as Miss New Hampshire or her summer work at Goldman Sachs.

I’m talking about her training as an opera singer. She studied at the New England Conservatory and spent a summer in Graz, Austria, at the American Institute of Musical Studies.
Regan, you see, put in the time to be an opera singer because she loved the craft.
“It’s not like I wanted to be Britney Spears,” she said. “Maria Callas was another story.”
The same principle has held true in her pursuit of a career in media.
“Everything I do, I do 100%, classical music or poring over earnings or interviewing someone,” she told me. “It consumes me. I can zero in on something and be completely focused.”

CNBC Highlights Governor Riley in Special

Montgomery, Al. (WSFA) — Governor Bob Riley was the focus of a special series on cable-news channel CNBC Tuesday.

The series Mike on America, hosted by Mike Hegedus, was in the capital city to interview Governor Riley recently.

From the governor’s annual one-shot turkey hunt, to the golden star where Jefferson Davis took the oath of office as the first President of the Confederate States of America, Governor Riley let the cameras follow him around as he explained his vision for Alabama.

One major reason for focusing on the Riley administration? Alabama’s economy is doing well despite a sagging overall U.S. economy.

Major companies like Northrup-Grumman, Thyssenkrup and Hyundai are now highlights of the state’s economic boom.

CNBC’s ‘Money Honey’ in growth hotspot
By Mustafa Alrawi and Frank Kane

When Maria Bartiromo, arguably the world’s most famous financial journalist, flies half way around the world to interview leading business players in the Gulf it must mean that the region is topping the global news agenda.

“Today globalisation is the story of the moment. The world really is smaller,” Bartiromo said while visiting the Dubai International Financial Centre. “We are in the Middle East right now and we are talking not about war but economic expansion. Globalisation of companies, economies and business is bringing people together.”

Nicknamed the “Money Honey” and the “Econo Babe” during the boom years of the stock market in the late 1990s and early noughties due to her striking looks, Bartiromo has been in Dubai, Doha and Qatar this past week interviewing the likes of DIFC Governor Dr Omar bin Sulaiman and Etihad airline’s CEO James Hogan.

Bartiromo normally mixes in such elite company, flying on private jets with CEOs and sharing sensitive information with central bankers, reporting from the New York stock exchange floor and hosting panels at the World Economic Forum in Davos – she is the face of CNBC, which broadcasts to 390 million people worldwide.

But has the intense attention over her looks as well as her in-depth knowledge diminished her appetite to chase answers to the more difficult questions?
