Committee chair wants ‘politicization’ answers
By WILLIAM TRIPLETT

Newly minted Fox News pundit Karl Rove — once known as “the genius” behind George W. Bush — has been subpoenaed to appear before the House Judiciary Committee.

Committee chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) said he wanted “testimony about the politicization of the Dept. of Justice, including former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman’s case.”

Siegelman was the subject of a recent “60 Minutes” segment showing evidence that the prosecution against him may have been politically motivated, possibly involving Rove.

The committee previously asked for Rove’s testimony, but Conyers’ office reported that it received a letter Wednesday from Rove’s attorney saying the former Bush White House insider would not testify voluntarily.

“It is unfortunate that Mr. Rove has failed to cooperate with our requests,” Conyers said in a statement. “Although he does not seem the least bit hesitant to discuss these very issues weekly on cable television and in the print news media, Mr. Rove and his attorney have apparently concluded that a public hearing room would not be appropriate. Unfortunately, I have no choice today but to compel his testimony on these very important matters.”

The subpoena was sent to Rove’s attorney on Thursday.

Pew Research shows dichotomy in interest, coverage
By Paul J. Gough

NEW YORK — Tens of thousands have died in the natural disasters in Myanmar and China, but the coverage has been fighting for airtime with campaign 2008 on U.S. cable news channels.

The Washington-based Pew Research Center for the People & the Press said Thursday that there was a fair amount interest among Americans for news about the Chinese earthquake, about as much as the ongoing presidential campaign. But it accused cable news channels in the U.S. of devoting way more coverage to the political campaign than the earthquake.

A Pew survey conducted last week said that 22% of Americans said they followed the Chinese earthquake more closely than any other news story over the week of May 12-18. It was slightly ahead of the percentage of Americans who closely followed the 2008 presidential campaign (22%) but nowhere near the top news story of the week, gasoline prices (31%).

Not that they expect Oregon-sized numbers, but Barack Obama supporters plan on providing a significant backdrop for a certain, locally based cable TV network on the evening of June 3, by filling the CNN Center lobby to celebrate the final Democratic primaries in Montana and South Dakota.

Thirty-one delegates are at stake that night — 15 in South Dakota, and 15 in Montana. Puerto Rico, where 55 delegates are at stake, will have voted two days before.

The communication to the “Obama family” notes that “even former Hillary supporters are invited to mark the end of a historic primary.”

There is no indication — let’s repeat that — there is no indication at all that the candidate himself will be here. However, given the venue, attendees are asked to wear Obama clothing and hats. There was no limit placed on style or taste.
