Fox News mockery
By Eric Gargiulo
Did you ever wonder what those national reporters are really thinking when they are asked the dumb question of the day from a local affiliate? Check out Fox News’ Rick Leventhal’s reaction after he is asked the dumb question of the day.
Note to Fox personalities: the red light means you are still being taped!

Okay, that was funny.

Ummm….the redlight would only be on if they were taping. The isn’t a case of the camera “taping” him. The satellite was punched up, & someone was rolling a tape back at a station somewhere, but not necessarily in the camera.
Having said that…Leventhal is right. Why is he being asked a totally irrelevant question that had nothing to do with the story he was reporting on. Can’t blame him for being annoyed.

Additionally, bigred, you can turn off the light (known as a “tally light”) pretty easily. You sometimes need to do that if you’re shooting through a window, or at a reflectable surface. That light doesn’t necessarily mean anything… especially, as you correctly pointed out, if the camera itself isn’t doing the recording.
Furthermore, anyone with a satellite might be able to pick up the signal. If someone at a local station, or a relay station was tuned in, they could have very easily recorded the raw feed, then uploaded it themselves. It is illegal to grab an unauthorized satellite feed, but that’s not to say it doesn’t happen.
